Sunday Bloody Thursday

Que cossa??!?!?
Thirsty Thirsday everyone--and as seen in the picture above--it's time for some "Italo Magic" dance music.  I've had this techno remix to U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" on my running playlist forever now and I thought I'd grace you with its brilliance.  I think I got it back in the days where I would type random things into Limewire and just download everything on the page.  Not crucial, I know.  Anyways, this album is probably bootlegged (as in almost every country around the world except for the United States) and I can't find much track info on it, but apparently it's by some artist called "Corale".  Sounds pretty Eurotrash to me.  Spent my fair share of time in Spanish clubs a few summers ago--they eat this shit up like gelato.  Second song is one a Spanish guy named Nacho (I kid you not) introduced me to.  Stay classy.

The Stick Up

I'm really liking the vibes I'm getting from the Downbeat Keys.  They have unbelievable flow, led by vocalist Ill Will, and are really pushing the envelope when it comes to making extra crispy tracks.  Got the chance to see them live a few months ago, and while the songs below have made their way onto my Jan. playlist, their charisma comes through moreso than any signed artists that I've seen.  They are by no means unknown either: they've opened for Matt and Kim, Talib Kweli and Soulive and drew attention from a number of record labels.  The group has been doing the college circuit and playing at bars in central New York, and I'm interested in seeing if they hold together and get picked up by a label in the future.  They sound a lot like The Roots with real instruments instead of the garbled crap that you usually get these days.  As always, beats to add to your flyTunes below.  Enjoy.

Something in the Air (Atmosphere?)

"The Woman with the Tattooed Hands"--Slug from Atmosphere

Today we've got a little bit of the rap group Atmosphere, which consists of Dj/Producer Ant and rapper Slug.  Really dig the video above-- hip hop sometimes sounds disconnected and unintelligible live but Slug seems so absolutely focused on his lyrics it's infectious.  Always awesome to see a rapper who isn't drowned out by their own beat--and speaks about something other than money, cars, 4loko...etc.

"I learned I no longer believe in surprise/ but what happened next damn near stole my tears/ the tattoos came alive right in front of my eyes/ they both slowly stood up and climbed off her hands/ and showed me why she never took some time with a man":

"Think about it.  you're so high sitting there/ thinking about thinking about it so high sitting there/ Strychnine sick vision impaired/ found the meaning of existing on the floor of your kitchen":

"You're not alone, it's hard as hell/ but don't waste no time feeling sorry for self/ We'll be right here with you, through your war/ Cause you're the one we make this music for":

"One double, for the hunger and the struggle/ two for the fool trying to pull apart the puzzle/ three now I smile whole I wait for your rebuttle/ by the fourth shot I'm just another child in a bubble":

Hola and a Shoutout to the DMV

Welcome errbody.  We're trying to keep the text to a minimum on the blog, so we're going to get straight to the point.  I want to direct everyone's attention to a new producer coming out of the DMV who seems poised to make it big: Brenton Duvall.  I'm going to add a disclaimer before I say anything--this kid went to my high school so I want him to make it big.  But honestly, the quality of the tracks that he is pumping out is unreal.  Be sure to check him out at the Potomac Boys Club website and on Facebook.  Passion Pit's Sleepyhead has been overworked as Tiger Woods' PR guy, but Brenton really distinguishes himself on the first track, adding Lil Wayne and Trina to the mix.  Second track, a remix of Mike Posner, makes me forget how the original sounded which is always a good sign.  He recently produced two songs with another D.C. native Young Prince, who flows real well over two cream instrumentals.  Don't think they're looking to pair up like Xaphoon Jones and Chiddy, but any rapper that doesn't see potential in Duvall's tight synths and trippy choruses is a few beers short of a six-pack.

Best enjoyed shaken, not stirred:
